Wardour is a hexagonal medieval castle, built by the Lovell family in the 14th century in imitation of a French model – its shape is unique in Britain.

The Lovells lost control during the Wars of the Roses, and in the throes of the Reformation their estate in the castle was purchased by the Arundells. In the Civil War of the 17th century the castle was besieged by both sides and the hexagon was partly destroyed by mines. The owners survived but abandoned the place for a classical country house further down the valley.
